Resistance to antimicrobials among bacteria, viruses and fungi is increasing. This means that bugs (microbes) that cause infections are becoming immune (resistant) to these drugs. The ESAC project gives an idea on the amount and type of drugs being used in various countries which is why ESAC is so important. Simultaneously, data on the status of antimicrobial resistance is being collected by a sister project also funded by ECDC, EARSS or European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System. Together, ESAC and EARSS provide a Pan-European picture of the current and emerging trends in antimicrobial use and resistance.
